REVEREND LARRY J. GROOM
The Reverend Larry J. Groom of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away on November 27, 2017, at the age of 73. Born November 30, 1943, to Marion Neil Groom and Verena (Boner) Groom, Larry was raised on a farm near Stanberry, Missouri, along with his brother Doyle. After graduating from Stanberry High School in 1961, Larry attended Northwest Missouri State University before relocating to Kansas City. He served in the Missouri Air National Guard during the Vietnam War and worked as a field engineer for National Cash Register for 21 years. While in Kansas City, he met his wife Joyce Christy. The couple moved to Kirksville where they raised 3 children.
Larry was called by God into the ministry and ordained by Hamilton Street Baptist Church in Kirksville in 1984. During 25 years of ministry in Northeast Missouri, he served as full-time pastor of First Baptist Churches of Memphis and Queen City and also pastored bi-vocationally at First Baptist Clarence and Sugar Creek Baptist while self-employed with Fire Safety Systems.
A devoted father and avid Missouri sports fan, Rev. Groom will be remembered for his steadfast faith in Christ Jesus, his love of travel, especially the Rocky Mountains, as well as his incomparable sense of humor.
In addition to his wife of 50 years Joyce, survivors include: oldest son Dr. Kevin Groom and wife Pashia (Wilson) Groom of Pensacola, Florida; daughter, April S. (Groom) Wilson of Memphis, Missouri; youngest son Christopher Groom and wife Stephanie (Drogan) Groom of Overland Park, Kansas; brother Doyle and his wife Judy of Stanberry; five grandchildren: Hadley Groom, Calloway Groom, Ian Wilson, Ainsley Wilson and Elise Groom; brother-in-law Ron Miller, 4 nieces and 1 nephew.
Visitation—Fellowship Baptist Church, Kirksville on Friday, December 1, 2017, from 6:00-8:00 pm.
Funeral Services–Fellowship Baptist Church in Kirksville at 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 2, 2017. The Patriot Honor Guard will lead the funeral procession to Mt. Zion Cemetery near Milan.
Ruschmeier Funeral Home in Green City will be handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home or Mt. Zion Cemetery.
