Gloria Lee Smith, 89, of Milan, Missouri, passed away Tuesday morning, November 20, 2018 at The Baptist Home in Chillicothe, Missouri.
The daughter of Orval and Norma Gladys (High) Smith, she was born January 16, 1929 in Pollock, Missouri.
Gloria spent most of her life in Sullivan County, graduating from Milan High School. Following high school, she taught at the Johnson School near Green City for one year. Gloria then attended Northeast Missouri State Teacher’s College in Kirksville. After college, she moved to Chicago where she worked for the Bell Telephone Company before returning to Milan and working for Raymond Smith in the Extension Office. Gloria retired in 1991 after many years working at the First National Bank which later became the United Missouri Bank in Milan. Gloria was a past member of the Milan Business and Professional Women’s Club, served on the board for the Southern District of the Baptist Association, and for many years, served as the treasurer for Oakwood Cemetery. She spent many years playing the organ for the First Baptist Church and was always willing to play when needed at any event. Gloria loved to read and enjoyed traveling to many places, not only in the United States, but around Europe and Canada as well.
The survivors include a nephew, Harold “Cub” Bear of Milan; one niece, Janice Lee Bear of Milan; two great nieces, Suzanne “Nicki” Gamet (Patrick) of Springfield, Missouri and Shelby Lynn Bear of Madison, Indiana; and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by: her parents; an infant brother; and a sister and brother-in-law, Floreine Bear and Paul Bear.
A memorial service for Gloria will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Schoene-Ruschmeier Funeral Home in Milan.
