Carol Janet Smith

August 12, 1927 ~ May 1, 2019 (age 91)



            Carol Janet (Yardley) Smith, 91, of Milan, Missouri, died Wednesday, May 1, 2019, at Sullivan County Memorial Hospital in Milan, Missouri.

            She was the daughter of Bernie Lee Yardley and Grace Maud (Boyd) Yardley, and was born on August 12, 1927, in Sullivan County, Missouri. Upon the death of her father Bernie Lee Yardley, her mother then married Hugh (Cinders) Sloan on September 2, 1932 in Sullivan County, Missouri.

            Carol was joined in marriage on May 31, 1946, to Clinton Dexter Smith in Kansas City, Missouri, who preceded her in death on December 14 2012, after 66 years of being together .

            Surviving are their three children: one son, Michael D. and Pam Smith, and two daughters, Janet S. and John Sayre, and Cathy J. and Jeff Dickerson, all of Milan; 9 grandchildren: Susan (Chris) Proffitt, John M. Sayre, Jaime (Damon) Garrison, Mindy (Billy) Smith, Patricia Smith, Samantha (Richard) Williams, Clinton (Sarah) Smith, Matthew (Renea) Smith, and Terry Carmer; 15 great grandchildren: Vance (Ashley) Proffitt, Jayce (Francisco) Carbajal-Proffitt, Christopher (Chasity) Burk, Kyler (Ciceley) Clark, Colt Eddy, David Eddy, Grant Garrison, Erin Garrison, Benjamin Williams, Richard Williams, Brandon Williams, Foster Smith, Sylvia Smith, Grace Smith, and Mary Smith; 7 great great grandchildren: Graeson Proffitt, Mallix Carbajal-Proffitt, Camilla Carbajal-Proffitt, Haley Burk, Hayden Burk, Holden Burk, and Bella Rose Clark; 3 brothers: Terrence (Donna) Sloan, Tony (Marie) Sloan,  Tom (Krista) Sloan, and one sister: Susan (Mike) Tate; and several nieces and nephews.

            She was preceded in death by her father, Bernie Lee Yardley; her parents, Hugh and Grace Sloan, and her husband, Clinton Smith.

            Carol spent most of her life in Sullivan County, Missouri. Her husband was a veteran and when he shipped overseas to Korea, she moved back to Milan from Waterloo, Iowa. Carol and Clint owned and operated Smiths Hy-Klas Grocery Store in Milan for a number of years; she then worked and retired from the kitchen at the Milan C-2 School. She was a member of the Sullivan County Country Club, Missouri Womens Bowling Association, the Milan Garden Club, the Ladies Bridge Club, and the Red Hat Ladies Club. She was a member of the Sullivan County Library and when you came to visit and she was reading, there was always one of her cats asleep on her lap. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, golfing, and bowling over the years. She was always working in her yard and flower beds and took great pride in all of her beautiful flowers. She also enjoyed feeding all kinds of birds especially hummingbirds. Carol enjoyed attending all of the family gatherings and everyone looked forward to her wonderful pies. She will be missed and is loved by all of her family.

            A visitation is scheduled for Friday, May 10, 2019, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Schoene-Ruschmeier Funeral Home in Milan, Missouri.  A private inurnment will follow at a later date.

            Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Sullivan County Senior Center and left with the funeral home.
