Amos Avery Sayre


Amos Avery Sayre of Lee’s Summit, MO, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2018. Amos was born June 5, 1930, on a farm east of Milan, MO, the youngest son of George Albert and Norma Mae (Bennett) Sayre. In 1959, he married Lois Baker who brought to the union two sons whom they raised together. In 1993, he married June Wilks who brought to the marriage a daughter. June and Amos enjoyed their golden years together on the family farm.

Amos resided in Milan 86 years and was very active in the local Republican Party. He enjoyed spending time with his family and especially the annual Sayre reunion. Amos farmed and worked construction in his younger years then later started his own bulldozing business building basements, ponds, clearing fences, or any excavation work needed by farmers and local business and home owners.

Amos was baptized in the Assembly of God Church and was a member of the Green City Church. He was a wonderful Christian man who loved sharing God’s word.

He is survived by his wife, June Sayre of Lee’s Summit, MO; sister-in-law, Thelma Sayre, Burlington, IA; two stepsons, Larry Lee and wife, Janie, Noel, MO, and LeRoy Alley and wife Becky, Branson, MO; one stepdaughter, Debbie Havens and husband Bill, Lee’s Summit, MO; nine grandchildren and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois; three brothers, Glen, Jake, and Joe Sayre; and seven sisters Raymah Armes, Betty Bailey, Mary Alice Heaton, Vivian Helton, Donna Lloyd, Maxine Sayre, and Pauline Smith. He was also preceded in death by his nephew, Marvin Sayre.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 15, 2018 at Schoene-Ruschmeier Funeral Home in Milan. Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery, east of Milan. A visitation is scheduled for one hour prior to the service, starting at 1:00 PM. 

Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
