Shirley Mae Speiser, 76, of Green Castle, Missouri passed away at her home on Tuesday, May 9, 2017.
She was born on April 6, 1941 in Princeton, Missouri to Garland and Ruth (Rockhold) Virden. Shirley was raised in Kirksville, Missouri. In 1969 she moved to Green Castle. She married Walter Gilbert Speiser on June 27, 1983 in Unionville, Missouri. He preceded her in death on March 15, 2007. Also preceding her in death are her parents, one son, Bobby Sullivan who passed away on March 21, 2003 and one brother, James Garland Virden.
Shirley is survived by one daughter; Shelly and husband Bill Wells of Green Castle, Missouri, one son; Danny Hocker of Brashear, Missouri, a very special person who was like her son, Vince Peeples of Green Castle, eleven grandchildren; Jeremy Sullivan (Angie), Jennifer Sullivan, Tierney Hocker, Teale Hocker, Kelsey Hocker (Kevin Martens) , Dalton Hocker, Macie Dale Hocker, Kristel Capps, Jessica Wells, Kimberly Wells, MaKayla Wells, Nine great grandchildren; Camdon Hocker, Jackson Hocker, Kinsley Martins, Brooklynn Mathews, Bentley Mathews, Ayla Capps, Ashtyn Hayes, Shad Hayes, Nevaeh Sullivan, a special friend, Charlie Sullivan of Kirksville, Missouri.
Shirley worked as a young girl at the Maid Rite in Kirksville. She also was employed at McGraws and the Northtown Café. She owned and operated Shirley’s Café in Green Castle and later in Green City. In later years she was employed with Walmart as a food demo person.
Shirley was a member of the Moose Lodge in Kirksville. She liked to play Bingo and go to the Casino in LaGrange. She enjoyed fishing, gardening and mowing her yard. Shirley spent many hours making lap robes that she donated to the residents of nursing homes in the area. Shirley loved spending time with her family. She will be dearly missed by her fur babies, Peanut and Sassy.
Graveside services are scheduled for 11:30 A.M., Friday, May 12, 2017 at the Green Castle Cemetery in Green Castle, Missouri. Officiating will be Rev. Alan Coonfield. Pallbearers will be Curt Guiles, Frankie Cuclich, Dalton Hocker, Jeremy Sullivan, Bobby Craig and Mike Peavler. A scheduled visitation will be held at Ruschmeier Funeral Home in Green City at 10:00 A.M., Friday until the time of service.
