Melvin E. “Lightning” Glidewell
Melvin E. “Lightning” Glidewell, 89 years old, of Milan, Missouri, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017, at Sullivan County Memorial Hospital in Milan.
Melvin was born December 21, 1927 to Leonard and Clara Belle (Sayre) Glidewell. Survivors include: three nieces, Julie Uhles and family of Flagstaff, Arizona, and Diane Fitzgibbons and family of Blue Springs, Missouri, and Donna Johnson and family of Raymore, Missouri; a nephew, Clint Glidewell and family of Overland Park, Kansas; a sister-in-law, Ilene Glidewell of Camp Berde, Arizona, and his Poole Hardware family. He was preceded in death by: his parents; and two brothers, Donald Glidewell and Calvin Glidewell.
Melvin was a lifelong resident of Milan. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War. Melvin was a mail carrier for USPS from 1952 to 1982, and then worked at Poole’s Hardware until recently. Melvin also repaired and sold golf carts for years, and was famous for his woven rugs he made in his spare time, donating many to the Milan, Browning, and Asbury Methodist Church festivals. Melvin was a member of the Sullivan County Country Club, the Oakwood Cemetery board, the American Legion Post #228, and the National Letter Carriers Association.
A funeral service for Melvin will be held at 7:00 PM, Monday, May 15, 2017, at Schoene-Ruschmeier Funeral Home in Milan. A visitation will be held two hours prior to the service; starting at 5:00 PM. Melvin’s wishes were to be cremated afterwards, with an inurnment at a later date.Memorial contributions are suggested to the Oakwood Cemetery or Sullivan County Country Club.
