JoAnne Celeste (Wolfe) Peters, 81, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away on Saturday, October 14th, 2017 at St. Luke’s Hospital on the Plaza.
She was the daughter of Enlo Kyle Wolfe and Bernice May (Smith) Wolfe. JoAnne was born September 27th, 1936 near Brookfield, Missouri. She married Gilbert Lee Peters on February 17th, 1957 in Phoenix, Arizona.
JoAnne is survived by her three daughters, Laurel and husband Eddie Murphy of Joplin, Missouri, Teri Smith of Golden, Missouri, Lisa and husband Brad Wood of Kansas City, Missouri and one son, Gilbert Timothy and wife Michele Peters of Nixa, Missouri; 5 grandchildren, Christine Schlesselman, Ryan and wife Meghan Smith, Thomas Peters, Conor Wood and Samantha Peters; and 1 great grandchild, Watson Smith; one sister, Carole and husband Lonnie Sallee of Kearney, Missouri and several nieces and nephews.
Her parents and husband Gilbert Peters, preceded her in death.
JoAnne lived on a small farm with her parents and sister near Purdin, Missouri during her early years of childhood. This farm was where her father was born and raised as a child. Later in her life she and her sister became the owners of the farm nearby that was in the same community. It became Wolfe property when her great grandfather Thomas Wolfe was discharged from the Civil War and he was given a small severance pay and he purchased this land and it remained in the family until the late 1990’s.
JoAnne attended a rural school and later the Purdin Elementary School. She attended her four years of high school at Liberty High School in Browning. She was a class officer each year and Salutatorian of her graduating class of 1954.
She attended Northeast Missouri State University at Kirksville, Missouri. She worked in Kansas City at Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company for her first job. She then moved to Phoenix Arizona and worked at Phoenix Title and Trust. After her marriage to Gilbert, she worked on the base of the Naval Ammunition Depot at Hawthorne, Nevada where he was stationed with the Marine Corps. They returned to Browning where Gilbert farmed and they raised their children in a house that his father had built and he had been born.
JoAnne was a member of the Browning United Methodist Church, Chapter 5, P.E.O., Sigma, Sigma, Sigma and American Legion Auxiliary. During the years of employment as clerical, she worked for several employers which included the Federal, State, County and City Governments.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM, Saturday October 21st, 2017 at the United Methodist Church in Browning, Missouri. Burial is in the Purdin Cemetery, Purdin, Missouri. A visitation is scheduled one hour prior to the service, starting at 1:00 PM. Ruschmeier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
